Stepdad Arrested 10 Years After Virginia Teen Disappeared

A massive breakthrough has rocked a ten-year-old cold case in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
On Friday, April 10, 2026, authorities arrested James Branton, 46, on a slew of "heinous" child sex crime charges.
The arrest marks a turning point in the investigation into his stepdaughter, Katelin Akens, who vanished without a trace over a decade ago.
Branton now faces eight criminal counts, including aggravated sexual battery, child cruelty, and indecent exposure.
According to court documents, the alleged abuse began in June 2006, targeting both Katelin and her younger sister when they were just 10 and 7 years old.
The charges surface as a grim backdrop to Katelin’s disappearance on December 5, 2015, the day Branton claimed he dropped her off at a Metro station for a flight to Arizona, a flight she never boarded.
The investigation moved into high gear on Saturday, April 11, as the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Virginia State Police swarmed Branton’s property.
Using ground-penetrating radar and heavy excavators, forensic teams spent the day digging through the yard. Crucially, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was spotted on-site, a move indicating that authorities are no longer just looking for digital evidence, but for human remains.
"We remain committed to locating Katelin and bringing her home," the Sheriff’s Office stated as they processed the scene. Branton, who long ago stopped cooperating with detectives and refused to unlock his encrypted cell phone, is currently held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
While no murder charges have been filed yet, Branton remains the prime suspect in a case that has haunted Virginia for ten years.
