A years-long court fight has reached another turning point. The nation's highest court has refused to step in, leaving a jury's verdict against a sitting president in place.

The ruling closes one legal battle, but another much larger one is still ahead.

WHAT HAPPENED

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's appeal in the 2022 defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll.

That means a 2023 jury verdict stands. The jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a New York department store dressing room in the mid-1990s and for defaming her in 2022 when he publicly denied her claims. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.

Trump argued the trial was unfair because jurors were allowed to hear part of the "Access Hollywood" recording and testimony from two other women who also accused him of sexual misconduct. Federal appeals judges had already ruled that evidence was properly allowed or did not unfairly affect the outcome.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

Supreme Court declined to hear Trump's appeal.

  • $5 million judgment remains in place.
  • Jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in 2023.
  • Appeals court upheld the verdict before the Supreme Court ruling.
  • Trump is still appealing a separate $83 million defamation judgment involving Carroll.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

The case is about more than one legal fight. It asks how far public figures can go when responding to accusations and whether repeated public denials can become defamation.

It also shows that legal cases involving high-ranking elected leaders can continue even after they return to office. For many voters, the bigger question is how these ongoing court battles will affect public trust.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Trump must pay the $5 million judgment unless another legal action changes the outcome.

A separate appeal over an $83 million defamation award is still pending. That case could bring another major court decision in the months ahead.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

When will the appeal in the $83 million case be decided?

  • Will Trump pursue any other legal options related to the $5 million judgment?
  • How will the remaining Carroll case affect Trump's legal and political future?
