Suspect Arrested After Molotov Cocktail Attack on OPENAI CEO Sam Altman’s Mansion

Silicon Valley’s tensions reached a violent breaking point early Friday, April 10, 2026, when an assailant targeted the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

A 20-year-old man is currently in custody after allegedly hurling a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s $27 million estate in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, sparking a fire that damaged an exterior gate.

The chaos didn't end at the residence. According to the San Francisco Police Department, the suspect fled the scene on foot around 4:12 a.m., only to resurface less than an hour later at OpenAI Headquarters on 3rd Street.

At approximately 5:07 a.m., officers responded to reports of a man threatening to burn the corporate building to the ground.

Responding units quickly realized the individual matched the description of the arsonist from the earlier attack and moved in for an immediate arrest.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt," an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement. "We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe."

The attack comes amid a cratering public perception of AI technology.

A Gallup poll released just yesterday shows that hope for AI among young people has plummeted from 27% to a mere 18% in just one year, with nearly a third of respondents reporting they feel "angry" about the tech.

Altman himself has been under fire this week following a scathing New Yorker profile by Ronan Farrow, which questioned his honesty and leadership.

While the 20-year-old suspect has not yet been named, the incident highlights the growing, high-stakes backlash against the face of the generative AI revolution.
