A shooting suspect allegedly fired at officers during a pursuit that began in Long Beach and ended with a crash in downtown Los Angeles, prompting major freeway closures and a police response.
WHAT HAPPENED
A shooting suspect led police on a wild chase early Tuesday, allegedly opening fire at officers on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach before eventually crashing into a power pole and fire hydrant in downtown Los Angeles.
The incident began around 12:24 a.m. when officers responded to a reported shooting on Aquarium Way in Long Beach. Two victims were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while another person was treated at the scene, according to police.
Authorities later located the suspect vehicle near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue. A pursuit then began as officers followed the vehicle onto the northbound 710 Freeway.
The chase quickly escalated.
According to police, the suspect fired shots at officers while traveling on the freeway. Officers returned fire, but authorities said no one was struck during the exchange.
The shooting and pursuit triggered a major law enforcement response, with the northbound 710 Freeway shut down at Long Beach Boulevard. Connectors to the 91 Freeway were also closed as investigators worked to secure the area.
The California Highway Patrol said at approximately 5 a.m. that the freeway closures would continue for another two hours as authorities investigated the incident.
THE CHASE ENDS IN DOWNTOWN L.A.
The pursuit eventually moved north toward downtown Los Angeles.
Police said the suspect crashed near Santa Fe Avenue and 11th Street after losing control of the vehicle and striking a power pole and fire hydrant.
The collision caused additional disruptions in the area. The damaged power pole knocked out electricity, while the broken fire hydrant sent water rushing into nearby streets.
The suspect was taken to a hospital following the crash. His condition was not immediately known.
Police also recovered a firearm from the scene, although investigators did not immediately release additional information about the weapon or whether it was the same firearm allegedly used during the freeway shooting.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or provided details about possible charges.
