OXNARD, Calif. — A 19-year-old student-athlete and restaurant worker is fighting for his life in critical condition after being struck by a stray bullet while on break inside a commercial shopping center, prompting a rapid police response and the arrest of a teenage suspect, authorities announced.
The shooting occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, at approximately 8:26 p.m. at the Five Guys Burgers establishment located in the 2700 block of Portico Way within The Collection at RiverPark commercial center in Oxnard.
According to an official updated press release published by the Oxnard Police Department, patrol officers and emergency medical personnel dispatched to the scene discovered a single shooting victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Bystander Employee Struck During Outdoor Altercation
The victim was identified as 19-year-old Jonathan Vasquez Jr., known affectionately as "JJ," a resident of Santa Paula. Emergency responders treated Vasquez at the scene before transporting him via ground ambulance to a local trauma center, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in critical condition.
Detectives assigned to the Oxnard Police Department Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) assumed primary control of the criminal investigation.
Through physical evidence collection, commercial surveillance review, and witness interviews, investigators determined that Vasquez was employed at Five Guys and was taking an official work break inside the dining area when the shot occurred. Authorities confirmed Vasquez was an innocent bystander and was not involved in or the intended target of the violence.
Investigators established that an argument broke out outside the restaurant between a 16-year-old Oxnard resident and two unidentified males. During the confrontation, a firearm was discharged, sending a single projectile through the establishment's exterior structure and striking Vasquez inside.
Search Warrant Execution and SWAT Arrest
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit gathered sufficient physical and circumstantial evidence to identify the 16-year-old shooter and locate his primary residence.
VCU detectives obtained an emergency search warrant for a home located in the 500 block of East First Street in Oxnard. Members of the Oxnard SWAT Team, the department K9 Unit, and VCU officers surrounded the residence and safely intercepted the juvenile suspect as he exited the house.
The 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard on felony charges of attempted murder.
The underlying motive for the initial outdoor argument and subsequent shooting remains under active investigation by law enforcement.
"Officers located a 19-year-old male who had been shot once. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition... The victim is an employee at the business and was on a break inside the business when he was shot. Investigators determined that the victim was not the intended target of the shooting," the Oxnard Police Department detailed in an official briefing issued by Detective Diego Estrada.
"VCU, Oxnard SWAT, and K9 Unit officers contacted and arrested the juvenile suspect as he left the residence. He was later booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center for attempted murder," police officials added.

Friends, family members, and community advocates described Jonathan Vasquez Jr. as an exceptional student-athlete dedicated to his family and education.
Prior to starting his job at Five Guys, Vasquez graduated high school as a student on the high honors roll while serving as captain of his varsity football team. He had recently enrolled at Ventura College, where he was preparing to join the collegiate track and field team as a thrower.
Following the tragic shooting, community members launched a verified online fundraiser to assist the Vasquez family with mounting medical expenses, intensive care bills, and long-term rehabilitation costs. Hundreds of local residents, classmates, and supporters have contributed to the effort, uniting under the social media hashtag #JJStrong.
