PARKER, Colo. — Bodycam footage released by the Parker Police Department captured a tense exchange during a traffic stop where a Tesla driver attempted to shift total responsibility for a speeding violation onto the vehicle's driver-assist software.
The incident occurred when an officer clocked a Tesla traveling 64 mph in a designated 45 mph zone. Upon approaching the vehicle and informing the driver of his speed, the motorist immediately contested the citation, claiming he was not operating the car at the time.
"I wasn't driving," the driver told the officer during the stop. "That's assist driving, autopilot, sir."
When the officer reminded the driver that he was still in charge of the vehicle and requested his driver's license, the motorist refused to accept responsibility and demanded to speak with a supervisor. He went on to suggest that law enforcement take up the matter directly with the vehicle manufacturer, stating, "That wasn't my fault, so you can complain to Tesla's customer service."

"Whether your vehicle has adaptive cruise control, lane centering, or full self-driving, you are still legally responsible for operating your vehicle safely."
