A tourist thought she saw a strange beach object, but it was a human jawbone with teeth.

Katherine Kinnison found the ancient remains of a Native American ancestor while walking along a busy California shore.

Walking on a sunny beach should bring peace, not a sudden face-to-face meeting with the deep past. Yet a simple walk on the sand can change how we look at the land we walk on.

WHAT HAPPENED

Katherine Kinnison came from New York to visit San Clemente, California. She went to Linda Lane Beach to paint near the pier. She saw something strange in the sand.

It was a human jawbone with teeth still in it. She did not touch the bone. She walked to a lifeguard to report it.

Local police sent the bone to a coroner. Experts say the bone is very old and belongs to a Native American. The Juaneño Band of Mission Indians lived here in the past.

FACT BOX

What the facts show

  • 1 human jawbone found near Linda Lane Beach.
  • Multiple teeth still attached to the bone.
  • 1 local tribe, the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, lived on this land.
  • 0 active criminal cases linked to the bone.
  • At least 2 groups involved, including the Orange County Sheriff and the Native American Heritage Commission.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

We often build our modern lives right on top of ancient graves. When the tides shift, the past has a way of coming back to the surface. How do we respect the people who lived here first when their remains wash up next to our beach towels?

THE OTHER SIDE

Some might think finding human bones on a popular beach means a crime just took place. But police say these finds are not unusual and happen a few times a year. This view seems very strong because the local shoreline has thousands of years of human history.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

The sheriff gave the bones to the Native American Heritage Commission. This group will try to learn more about the person. They will work to return the jawbone to the right tribal group for a proper burial.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

Was the jawbone from a male or a female?

  • How many years ago did this person live?
  • Are there other ancient remains buried under this same beach?
