SANTA PAULA, Calif. — A specialized police K9 trained to detect concealed weapons helped patrol officers uncover a hidden stash of illegal firearms inside a West Harvard Boulevard residence, leading to the arrest of a local man on $500,000 bail, public safety officials announced.
The probation search took place at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at a residential property in the 200 block of West Harvard Boulevard in Santa Paula.
K9 Detection and Firearms Recovery
According to an official agency update released by the Santa Paula Police Department, patrol officers conducted a routine compliance search under active probation terms assigned to a resident at the location.
Due to the unique and complex physical concealment of items inside the dwelling, officers deployed a police K9 specifically trained in detecting firearms, ammunition, and explosive scent signatures.
The police dog alerted handlers to a concealed compartment within the residence. Upon further physical search of the alerted area, officers located and seized two handguns:
- One Stolen Handgun: Verified through state databases as stolen property.
- One Untraceable "Ghost Gun": An illegally manufactured handgun lacking a valid serial number or background check registration.
Custodial Booking and Gun Safety Outreach
Officers arrested 29-year-old Santa Paula resident Jose Herrera at the scene. Herrera was transported to the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura and booked on multiple weapons charges, including:
- Possession of a loaded firearm in public or inside a restricted location
- Possession of an un-serialized firearm ("ghost gun")
- Unlicensed transfer of a firearm
- Concealing evidence
Herrera remains held in county custody in lieu of $500,000 bail pending initial court proceedings in Ventura County Superior Court.
