In a move that shattered presidential precedent, Donald Trump marched into the Supreme Court on Wednesday to witness the legal battle over his plan to end birthright citizenship.
This marks the first time a sitting president has attended oral arguments, putting the nine justices under the direct "glare" of the executive branch.
Trump sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, as his legal team argued that the 14th Amendment has been misinterpreted for decades.
The president’s executive order demands that parents prove their legal status before a child born on U.S. soil is granted citizenship, a policy lower courts have already blocked.
Immediately following the hearing, Trump took to social media to torch the current system.
“We are the only Country in the World STUPID enough to allow ‘Birthright’ Citizenship!” he posted.
However, facts on the ground tell a different story.
While Trump claims the U.S. is alone in this practice, data from the Pew Research Center confirms that 32 other countries, including Canada and Mexico, have similar laws guaranteeing citizenship by birth.
The ACLU, representing the plaintiffs, didn't hold back. Executive Director Anthony Romero slammed the president’s attendance, stating the court would "school him" on the Constitution.
Legal Director Cecillia Wang, herself a birthright citizen, argued that Trump’s order is a direct violation of long-standing constitutional law.
