Vance Orders Minneapolis to ‘Stop Fighting’ ICE Amid Federal Crackdown

Vice President JD Vance arrived in Minneapolis on Thursday with a blunt ultimatum for city leadership: "stop fighting" federal immigration enforcement. The visit marks a significant escalation in the administration’s nationwide crackdown, as the executive branch moves to override local "sanctuary" policies and ensure full cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The tension in the Twin Cities reached a breaking point following the controversial detention of a 5-year-old boy by ICE agents as he returned home from preschool. The incident has sparked a firestorm of local outrage, leading to violent skirmishes between federal agents and activists. On the ground, agents have reportedly deployed green smoke canisters to disperse protesters amidst heavy snowfall, turning the city's streets into a visual battlefield over immigration jurisdiction.
While the Vice President focused on Minneapolis, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) simultaneously expanded its reach to the Northeast. The agency officially launched "Operation Catch of the Day" in Maine, a specialized initiative aimed at locating and deporting undocumented individuals with criminal records.
The administration’s aggressive "surge" strategy signals a shift toward high-visibility enforcement, regardless of local resistance. As Vance concluded his visit, he emphasized that federal law would take precedence over municipal protections, suggesting that cities refusing to assist ICE could face severe federal consequences.
