University of Alabama Student James Gracey Disappears in Barcelona After Visiting Friends

The University of Alabama community and the family of student James Gracey are urgently seeking information following his disappearance in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

Gracey, an 11th-semester senior at the university, traveled to the city to visit friends who are currently studying abroad in the region.

According to family members and local reports, Gracey was last seen leaving a nightclub in the popular El Born district in the early hours of Saturday morning.

His friends stated that he intended to return to his accommodations but never arrived. "He was in high spirits and enjoying the trip," one friend noted.

"We realized something was wrong when he didn't respond to any texts or calls the following morning, which is completely out of character for him."

The U.S. Consulate in Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday, March 17, that they are working closely with Spanish authorities to locate the missing student.

The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, have launched a formal missing persons investigation and are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area where Gracey was last spotted.

Gracey’s mother, who traveled to Barcelona immediately after learning of his disappearance, issued a plea for help on social media.

"We just want him home safe," she wrote. "If anyone saw James or has any information about where he might be, please contact the authorities immediately."

She described her son as an experienced traveler who was familiar with navigating urban environments.

The University of Alabama issued a statement expressing deep concern for Gracey’s safety and offering support to his family and friends.

"The University is in communication with the U.S. Department of State and local authorities in Spain," the statement read.

"Our thoughts are with the Gracey family during this incredibly difficult time, and we remain hopeful for James’s safe return."

While Spanish police have not yet indicated any signs of foul play, they are exploring all possibilities, including the potential that Gracey may have become disoriented or encountered an accident.

Local volunteer groups have joined the search efforts, distributing flyers throughout the city and utilizing social media to spread awareness of the case.
