US Citizen Teen Released Same Day After ICE Detention in Oxnard

A tense confrontation in the Lemonwood neighborhood of Oxnard has highlighted the growing friction between federal immigration agents and local community observers. On Tuesday morning, January 13, 2026, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained a teenager while he was walking in the residential area. The incident, which was witnessed and recorded by community volunteers, ended later that day with the teenager being released and returned home.
Confrontation Between Agents and Volunteers
Volunteers with VC Defensa, a group that monitors immigration enforcement activity in Ventura County, arrived on the scene around 6 30 a.m. after receiving reports of federal vehicles in the neighborhood. According to the volunteers, the encounter quickly escalated. They allege that ICE agents used pepper spray on the volunteers' vehicles before moving to a nearby street, San Mateo Place. There, witnesses reported seeing three armed agents tackle an individual to the ground.
The individual was identified as a teenager between 16 and 18 years old. Witnesses described a scene of significant force, claiming the youth was struggling as he was being pinned. Organizers with VC Defensa began alerting the neighborhood, but they report being pepper sprayed again as the agents placed the teen in a vehicle and drove away.
Citizenship Confirmed and Teen Released
The situation took a turn when organizers connected with the teenager’s family later that morning. They confirmed that the teen is a United States citizen. Following community outreach and pressure from local activists, the teenager was released from federal custody and returned to his family by the end of the day. Elaine Yompian, an organizer with VC Defensa, stated that the incident contradicts the official narrative that only criminals are being targeted.
Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor ICE has provided an official response to the incident or the allegations of excessive force and pepper spray use against observers. The Lemonwood community remains on high alert, as volunteer groups continue to patrol the area to provide resources and legal information to residents. Activists say this case serves as a prime example of why community oversight is necessary to prevent the unlawful detention of citizens.
