The 38-year-old soldier, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, allegedly utilized insider knowledge regarding Operation Absolute Resolve. This mission resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3, 2026.
Prosecutors claim that Van Dyke invested approximately $33,000 into the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket. These bets were reportedly placed in late December 2025 and early January 2026, just days before the raid took place.
The soldier allegedly selected "YES" on contracts predicting the removal of Maduro and imminent U.S. military intervention in Venezuela. Following the successful execution of the raid, his positions reportedly yielded a profit exceeding $400,000.
Van Dyke’s role in the military provided him with direct access to sensitive planning and execution details for the operation. He had previously signed multiple nondisclosure agreements intended to protect such classified information from public exposure.
The Justice Department alleges that Van Dyke attempted to conceal his activities by transferring his winnings into various cryptocurrency accounts. He also reportedly contacted Polymarket to request the deletion of his betting profile and history.
