A mother of two went out to deliver mail on her rural route and never came back
Police charged a local man with murder after finding 35-year-old Brandi Reynolds dead on her mail route in North Carolina.
Delivering the mail is supposed to be a safe, everyday job. But a routine Friday shift turned into a nightmare that left two young girls without a mother.
WHAT HAPPENED
Brandi Reynolds was working her route in Wilkes County, North Carolina, on Friday afternoon. Police say someone attacked and killed the 35-year-old mail carrier while she was on duty.
Officers arrested 56-year-old William Craig Durham. They charged him with first-degree murder and kidnapping. Court papers say he held Reynolds against her will to terrorize her.
Durham is now in jail without bond. His lawyer did not want to comment when reporters asked.

- Suspect: William Craig Durham, 56, who has a prior criminal record.

WHY IT MATTERS
People in small towns trust their mail carriers. They see them every day and treat them like family. This attack breaks that sense of safety for workers who walk our streets.
It also leaves two young children completely alone. Their father died in a car wreck just last year. Now, the town is grieving a woman who was always friendly and reliable.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Durham will stay behind bars while he waits for his next court date. Three different law groups are working together to investigate the crime.
Local neighbors are finding ways to support the two daughters left behind. The post office says they will share more news when they can.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
Why did the suspect target Brandi Reynolds?
- Did the suspect and the victim know each other before this happened?
- What kind of weapon did the killer use in the attack?
