SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — A Ventura County firefighter remains hospitalized with major injuries after a vehicle bypassed an emergency closure and slammed directly into an active crash investigation scene on the Ronald Reagan Freeway early Sunday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, along the westbound lanes of State Route 118 near Tapo Canyon Road in Simi Valley.
The enforcement action and subsequent arrest were handled by officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Moorpark Area office.
Initial Wrong-Way Crash and Emergency Blockade
According to preliminary incident reports from the California Highway Patrol and local fire officials, first responders were originally dispatched to the westbound 118 Freeway to handle a separate head-on traffic collision involving a wrong-way driver.
To protect first responders, tow personnel, and crash victims, emergency crews established a standard freeway blockade. Flares, marked patrol vehicles, and a Ventura County Fire Department engine were deployed to redirect approaching traffic around the active work zone.
While crews were actively working the initial wreck, the driver of a red Tesla drove through the established flare line and warning barriers, entering the closed perimeter.
Impact, Firefighter Injuries, and On-Scene Arrest
The Tesla continued through the emergency zone without stopping, colliding with both a parked Ventura County fire engine and a firefighter who was assisting on foot.
Emergency medical technicians and paramedics on scene immediately rendered aid to their injured colleague. The firefighter was transported to a regional trauma center with injuries classified by authorities as major.
CHP officers placed the Tesla driver under arrest at the scene. Investigators noted that while no intentional foul play is suspected, the collision remains under investigation.
Traffic on the westbound 118 Freeway was restricted for approximately four hours while collision reconstruction specialists mapped the scene and cleared damaged vehicles.
"CHP officers and firefighters were already on scene investigating an earlier crash involving a wrong-way driver when the second collision occurred... The driver of a red Tesla drove through the blockade, striking a Ventura County fire engine and a firefighter," official CHP public advisories detailed.
Move Over Law and Roadway Safety Reminders
California’s Move Over Law (VC § 21809) requires all drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles or tow trucks displaying flashing amber or red lights to clear the lane adjacent to the emergency situation or slow down to a safe, reasonable speed.
Public safety officials remind motorists to remain attentive when approaching traffic advisories, flares, or highway closures, as first responders on foot face significant dangers while working along freeway shoulders and active lanes.
Members of the public who witnessed the collision or have additional information regarding the incident are encouraged to contact the CHP Moorpark Area office at (805) 553-0800.
