VENTURA, Calif. — A late-night shooting incident in the Westside neighborhood of Ventura has officially transitioned into a active homicide investigation following the death of the adult male victim at a regional trauma hospital over the weekend, public safety officials announced.
The major crimes inquiry originated during the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, when emergency 911 dispatchers with the Ventura Police Department received multiple urgent community calls reporting possible gunfire heard in the residential area surrounding West Ramona Street and Riverside Street.
Responding patrol officers immediately converged on the residential intersection and surrounding blocks to search for potential victims, witnesses, physical evidence, or fleeing suspect vehicles. However, initial on-scene canvassing efforts yielded no immediate victims or suspects at the outdoor location.
Shortly after officers began searching the West Ramona Street corridor, emergency medical staff at the nearby Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) alerted police dispatch that a male victim suffering from critical, life-threatening gunshot wounds had just been dropped off at the emergency room entrance by an unidentified vehicle.
Emergency Hospitalization and Four-Day Medical Battle
Medical personnel at Ventura County Medical Center immediately initiated critical trauma interventions and admitted the victim in grave condition. Ventura Police Department Major Crimes Unit detectives responded directly to both the emergency department and the West Ramona Street neighborhood to coordinate investigative workflows, secure physical evidence, and attempt to identify the vehicle used to transport the victim to the facility.
Despite multi-day emergency medical care by hospital physicians and trauma staff, the victim was unable to overcome the severity of his injuries. The identity of the deceased victim is currently being withheld by law enforcement pending formal confirmation and next-of-kin notification by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.
"On August 4, at about 1:05 am, our dispatchers received calls reporting possible shots heard in the area of West Ramona Street and Riverside Street. Officers responded and were unable to locate any victims. While officers were investigating the incident, an adult male shooting victim was dropped off at the Ventura County Medical Center," the Ventura Police Department detailed in an official public statement.
"On August 8, 2026, the victim of the shooting succumbed to his injuries at VCMC. No arrests have been made at this time. This appears to be an isolated incident and there does not appear to be a threat to the community," department officials confirmed in an updated statement.
