A shoplifter tried to outrun the police. He ended up crashing into a fire hydrant and hiding under a car.

Police recovered nearly $6,000 in stolen clothes after a short car chase at the Camarillo Outlets.

We all want to feel safe when we go out to shop. But a quick trip to the mall turned into a dangerous police chase.

WHAT HAPPENED

On June 21, 2026, police went to the Camarillo Outlets. They got a call about two people stealing from stores.

Deputies found one suspect, Cristhian Perez Martinez, near his car. Martinez jumped in his car and sped away.

The chase ended when Martinez crashed into a parked car, a police car, and a fire hydrant. He ran on foot and tried to hide under a car, where police caught him.

What the money/evidence shows

  • Police found nearly $6,000 worth of stolen clothing and items in the car.
  • Martinez crashed into three things: a parked car, a police unit, and a fire hydrant.
  • Martinez was already on probation in Los Angeles County for burglary.
  • He had an active warrant for grand theft in San Bernardino County.
  • He now faces seven charges, including grand theft and organized retail theft.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How do retail thieves manage to hit multiple stores across different counties without getting caught sooner? This arrest shows a pattern of thefts that went on for a long time before this crash.

We must ask if our local malls have the right security to stop these crimes before they turn into dangerous chases on our streets.

THE OTHER SIDE

Martinez has not yet given his side of the story in court, and his defense will likely look at whether police had the right to search his car. Given the stolen goods found in his trunk and the crash, this will be a very hard case for his defense team to fight.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Martinez is now in jail with his bail set at $100,000. Shop owners at the Camarillo Outlets are left to clean up and deal with the high costs of retail theft.

This case might lead to more police presence at local malls to keep shoppers safe and stop future thefts.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Who was the second suspect seen stealing with Martinez, and did they get away?
  2. How many times did Martinez target the Camarillo Outlets before this arrest?
  3. Will his probation status in Los Angeles lead to a longer prison sentence?

SOURCE NOTE

This story is based on reports from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. All charges are allegations - Cristhian Perez Martinez is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
