Yuba City Police Release Footage of Officer-Involved Shooting Involving Shovel Attack

The Yuba City Police Department has released video footage documenting an officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 26 near Rapid Falls Drive and Bogue Road. The incident began around 9:15 a.m. following reports of a man walking naked through a residential neighborhood.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Guillermo Figueroa of Yuba City. Police allege that Figueroa assaulted a family member and attempted to break into a nearby residence by ramming a front door before officers arrived on the scene.

Initial attempts to communicate with the suspect were unsuccessful as Figueroa reportedly fled from the responding officers. A foot pursuit followed, during which law enforcement personnel attempted to take him into custody using non-lethal methods.

Department officials stated that officers deployed Tasers and batons in an effort to subdue the suspect. These measures reportedly failed to stop his resistance.

According to the police report, Figueroa subsequently brandished a shovel and attempted to strike the officers. In response to the perceived threat, one officer discharged a firearm twice, striking the suspect in the torso.

Officers on the scene provided immediate medical assistance before Figueroa was transported to a local hospital. He is currently reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The family member who was allegedly assaulted during the initial disturbance received treatment for minor injuries and has since been released. Two officers involved in the encounter, identified as Emilio Campos and Christopher Doble, also sustained minor injuries.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure following any officer-involved shooting. The public has been informed that there is no ongoing threat related to this specific incident.

The case is now under the scrutiny of several agencies to ensure a comprehensive review of the use of force. The regional investigation team, the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Department of Justice are all participating in the inquiry.

This release of footage reflects a broader effort toward transparency in law enforcement actions. California law requires the disclosure of video evidence in cases where officers use lethal force or cause significant injury.
